2012 Lincoln Cent Search

The members of the OCCC participated in a Lincoln cent search in Q1 of 2012. The search started during the week of January 22 and continued for ten weeks. The intent was to determine how many of the 2009 commemorative cents (and older coins) can be found in the general cent population. Approximately fifteen club members (adults and YNs) registered for the activity by acquiring 5 rolls of cents each week, searching through the rolls and noting the findings. Each participant was given a tally sheet on which to record their findings. The overall findings will be presented during National Coin Week (April 2012). Below are some of the notable findings:

Over 36,000 cents were categorized by 13 searchers
1 Indian Head cent found (1904)!
Several early S-mint cents found (1920-S, 1939-S)
Very low number of 2009 Commemorative cents found (161 of 36,000+, less than 1/2%)
Low number of "Wheatie" cents found (215 of 36,000+) (They are getting rare!)
One "Steelie" cent (1943) found! These are getting rare, too!
Only a couple of 2012 cents reports.
Zinc cents (1982+) outnumber the older copper cents (1982 and earlier) by about 3-to-1.
Overall results consistent with findings from 2007 (5 years ago.)
